Am I just a wimp?

So, since I found out I was pregnant, I've been really excited,
but also quite aprehensive, and unsure of myself. I keep questioning
whether I should see the doctor I had with Rowan (who was amazing),
or go to a midwife (which I'm not sure I'd have the option of still anyway.).
I just feel like there were a lot of uncertainties with my first birth
experience that could have been calmed, had I had a midwife with me
the whole time.  Does anyone have any advice?  I have my first appointment
with my doctor on tuesday, which I'm really looking forward to.  I guess I'll make a decision after that.  It took a long time to get in for an appointment this time.
I guess other people really like my doctor as well!

stacey! congrats!!!!! as soon as alyssa and michelle told me you were having a baby i've wanted to congratulate you, but waited until you posted it (b/c it seems it's mostly thru the wonderful and oh-so-handy blogging world that you and i are connected these days) anyway, i am so very happy for you! i had 2 lil boys in my life born over christmas and now your news... hmmm... makes me want a baby too! :) but no worries, i'll be waiting a long while. it's just that my maternal antenae seem to be popping up quite often these days.

may your pregnancy go really well!
always,
dayna

Hi Stacey. I totally understand the aprehensive feelings you've got. I went through the same thing during my first trimester.

My advice is to stick with your appointment with the doctor, but to call the midwifery office if you would like to meet with them to ask questions and see what they are all about, and if they could possibly fit you into their care (as of April they'll be back to three in the area. Right now they are only two). I've really enjoyed my experience with the midwives, how they spend nearly an hour of their day with me and just answer any questions I have and also give me options I didn't have with my previous birth.

Something that Walter and I considered with our first pregnancy, but never went through with regrettably, is having a "doula". This is a midwife who is there during the entire labour and birth who is sort of a mediator between you and the doctor. We didn't go through with it because our doctor wasn't too keen on the idea ... something that should have sent warning signals, eh?

I hope that your appointment goes well tomorrow! Whatever you decide - doctor or midwife - I hope the experience suits your specific needs.

Hi Mel! I did check into doulas on the internet, and it costs $550 to hire a doula in Manitoba!! Unfortunately, I don't think we can afford to do that, otherwise it's a great idea though!

i never had a midwife so no advice here :-) just find an obgyn your comfortable with and enjoy seeing

Where I live we would have to drive to Winnipeg, which is 1 1/2 hours away, to see an obgyn. So, we see our family doctors, who are great! At least I have a really good one. I really trust her, and she was great when I had Rowan. I just feel like I would like to have someone with me during the whole labour, not just at the end. Keith is great, but he doesn't know how to help me when I'm in that much pain!!

Stacey - you have a female doctor... I'm jealous! I hear there is a waiting list for them in this area.

As for doulas - yeah, expensive. Is it all across MB that you have to pay that amount for a doula?

But I'm so looking forward to not only one - but two - midwives present (according to Manitoba health protocol) during my labour and birth instead of the usual nurse shift changes that I experienced with Jolee.

I'm so excited for you and this new little Friesen to enter the world! Does Rowan have any idea what's going on?

Actually, I did know that you have two midwives present at a birth. And I think that price for doulas is for Winnipeg and Southern Manitoba. Too bad...

Rowan knows there is a baby in mommy's tummy, but I'm not sure how much he understands yet!

Ken was absolutely auesome during my labour with Zach, all 21 hours of it, couldn't of done it without him, drugs are also a wonderful thing. Don't ever feel like you're letting yourself down by taking them. Their there to give you the relief that you need.

Keith was there the whole time, but he didn't feel like he could help me. I also had Demerol, and I will NEVER do that again. I think it was what made everything harder... I couldn't think straight. As for other drugs, I guess we'll see what I ask for this time!

I hope that your appointment went well Stacey. Did you get to hear the baby's heartbeat at this appointment?

Hi Heather! I actually have stumbled across your blog once or twice (gotta love blogging!), but I didn't realize you live in Winkler! I'm glad you commented. Are you planning on getting back to work yet before summer?
