Babysitters?

First of all, Rowan and I are feeling a bit better today. Except that I have a nasty sore throat, and can hardly talk. Rowan was still pretty out of it yesterday, and I wasn't exactly feeling too great.

It makes for a super messy house when you lie around feeling lousy all day! So, that's what I'm up to today, trying to catch up. I washed half the dishes, and then had to sit down for a rest. It's going to take a long time to clean like this!

I found a link to this hilarious site a few weeks ago, with really stupid parenting 'how-to's'. This one picture prompted me to think about babysitters.

How do you find a good babysitter? Right now the only people that watch my kids are family. And sometimes that just doesn't work!

What are your tips for finding a great babysitter? And how much would you pay a babysitter?

I'd love to have your suggestions.

Now, off to figure out what to have for lunch!

Steal other people's babysitters! Actualy, I'm not joking; ask around to see who the good babysitters are.

A friend needed a babysitter so I started calling around to the (responsible) youth in my Youth Group. It's all about who you know!

As to what to pay, that I'm not sure, as I have never had to hire a babysitter and the last few times I've babysat were the Westman children and I'll never charge for those kids (I also happened to already be in Winnipeg)! I'd make the same offer to you but it's a little out of my way. :)

Hmmm...I can't say I can really help you out on the babysitter thing! Tate has only had a babysitter once and it was our only close friend from church and she's got a little boy about 6 months younger than Tate, so it was perfect. Probably the next time he'll have a sitter will be when I go into labor...and I'm not looking forward to that! (neither the labor or leaving Tate with a sitter for who knows how long - all I know is it BETTER take less than 23 hrs. this time. :) ). Okay, so I'm getting sidetracked. Our babysitters that we would get if we had to are all adults. I just don't trust youth with my kids...maybe college and career age ones...but most of them act like they know what they are doing, but all I need to do is watch them in the nursery with Tate for a while and they really arn't too sure about a lot of things that adults would know more about. So I vote for adult babysitters. :) And as for wage? Hmmm...no clue! Me and my friend babysit for each other for free sooo...that works really nice! ;)

Oh, and I hope you feel better soon...Rowan too! I hate it when I'm sick and the house becomes a disaster zone...

Carter usually just goes to my parents when we need a sitter! But we also do have a few girls that we call if they're not available. We know them all quite well and two of them are past college age, and the other one is 12! The general rate here is $4 per an hour, for one kid, and go up a dollar an hour for every kid on top of that.

That's a great image! Got a laugh :)

I've never used a babysitter besides my parents or sister or in-laws... so far.... I'm not sure yet if I'm ready to leave my son with someone who isn't family yet.

Hey Stacy. I asked around for a sitter, but I also wanted it to be someone who lived close, as in not in Winkler. I have family to watch him often but I didn't wanna feel like I was taking advantage. Plus I want Caden to build a relationship with a babysitter, as I did when I was small. My moms friend said her niece who is 12 would be great, and they live only 3 miles away. So I had her over for a couple of hours one afternoon to observe her with Caden. I did my everyday stuff, and she took care of him. She also has 3 younger siblings so that helps my confidence in her. I asked her mom what to pay, and she said no more than $2 an hour. (although i pay $2.50) I've got neighbors who she could call in an emergency, and her mom is not far away either. I just have faith in her.

I think a good place to look for a babysitter would be your youth group. I'm sure you know most of the girls in there, and I always found when the girls are about 13 or so, they're usually pretty eager to babysit.
I used to pay $5 an hour back when we still had a babysitter coming in. But a friend told me not so long ago that the "going rate" in the evening is actually about $6 an hour.
All the best with finding a babysitter.

You know, I based that $5-6 dollars an hour on 3 kids, so obviously it wouldn't that much for 1, assuming you need a sitter just for Rowan.
