Christmas

How is that every year, despite my efforts, I end up consumed by Christmas shopping. Trying to find the perfect gift, doing the gift exchanges only to give something that someone will never use, or GET something that I politely accept.

I am trying really hard this year to make a lot of the gifts, or do something more thoughtful. It's hard though, and I still get wrapped up in it all.

I saw this short video today, and I really wanted to pass it on. What are you giving this year?

And just because we're talking about Christmas, here's my two little ones singing Away In A Manger. Rowan learned it by heart in 2 days :)

Awww...that's the sweetest singing I've heard in a while. Love the actions, too!

Oh that's incredibly sweet.

I've been making all of my gifts. I had some watering cans and used puff paint to write a little saying about grandparents on it. Then I added a packet of seeds & an IOU promising Moose's "help" to plant the seeds later.

I finger-knit my sisters scarves & gave them a shirt & book.

I made Moose coloring books by Googling color pages of certain things I wanted.

And I'm making a homemade cookbook for my husband with recipes from our friends (hopefully) and a jar with sort of superlatives about how much I love him and why.

Sometimes he's actually singing harmony, did you notice that? I love being able to watch your kids grow and change!

So sweet how he just picked up on that song...and Bria's trying real hard to keep up too :)
I noticed the harmony too!

Christmas stopped being fun for me a few years ago...because I would go broke and get stressed out trying to shop and spend money that we didn't have. This year I have vowed to do exactly your message...spend less money, spend more time with family...and give gifts that are truely meaningful...like stuff we used to do as kids. The kids and I are making ALL of our gifts this year...and for the first time in a LOOOONG time I am having fun with it. BTW, the video of your boys is great!!! I love when children sing about Jesus :)

I LOVE giving gifts. I love shopping for the perfect gift. I will not buy something if I think it is a mediocre. I like getting people stuff they wouldn't normally buy for themselves (they want it, but they don't have the money for it or can't justify buying it) That way people can get what they want and not feel guilty about it. I also love making my own gifts, but my abilities are limited. I don't want to make stuff people will never use! That's why christmas lists are awesome.

But as much as I love giving gifts, I would never trade if for the time I spend with family over the holidays, it is the best gift of all!

Very cute song!

Great video on giving at Christmas. I've been thinking a lot about meaningless spending this year, especially thinking of my little ones and that they don't care or know how much we spend. It's sure hard though, because one of my favorite ways to show love (at any time of year) is with gifts.
